Question of the Month - May 2007

Question:  As the Green Cleaning market explodes, there are many different standards and guidelines available for Green Product, how do I know which is the best one to follow?

Steve’s Answer:  It's definitely a good news, bad news situation. The good news is, there are more and better Green products out there than ever, and market demand and competition have driven prices down. So not only can you do “the right thing,” but you can save money doing it. The bad news is because there are so many new products, guidelines and tools available, you may be a little confused about which is the “right” one to follow.

My feeling is that there are many roadmaps that will take you to Green Cleaning, and it doesn’t matter which roadmap you choose – they will all take you towards your destination. There are a variety of well-regarded organizations that independently evaluate and certify Green products and/or provide guidelines for implementation. So whether you follow Green Seal or Environmental Choice, LEED-EB or Greenguard, just get started.  Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Make a few changes at a time. Don’t feel so overwhelmed that you do nothing at all, and congratulate yourself simply for beginning the journey.
